BREAKING: Tom Winnifrith & Evil Banksta: Belluscura, TMT Acquisitions, Nigel Wray and Dowgate

Nigel Wray attended my most recent wedding almost ten and a half years ago and he is my friend. Or I really hope that he still is. I do not wish that to change but the optics of the proposed takeover by Belluscura (BELL) of TMT Acquisitions (TMTA) now look terrible for him and he should insist that it be renegotiated. I flagged this up in Bearcast yesterday but I now dig deeper and bring in comment from Evil Banksta who is short of Belluscura.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Don't listen Nigel Wray, Stuart Ashman prompts more bad language

In today’s bearcast I start with happy events in London last night to cheer both myself and the Euroloon Jonathan Price. Then it is on to Verditek (VDTK), Canadian Overseas (COPL), Regtech Open (FRAUD) and Supply@ME Capital (FRAUD) all four of which owe us statements. Then Kefi Gold & Copper (KEFI) and Skinbiotherapeutics (SBTX).

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: As Tingo suspension extended the writing is on the wall for Technology Minerals, escape while you can! It will be a zero too.

I start with a report on yesterday’s soccer with daughter 2. Then I look at Belluscura (BELL) and as if Nigel Wray can really still justify the corporate action? Then it is on to Totally (TLY), the fraud Tingo (US:TIO), Technology Minerals (TM1), Doc Martens (DOCS) and Global Petroleum (GBP),

Ideas from ShareStock No 1 – a short, going into bat against Nigel Wray

I cannot say how much I like and admire and am grateful to Nigel Wray. He was one of a select group at my last wedding 10 years ago and he will be invited to the next one. Not that there will be a next one! But should one go into bat against Wray? This is the first idea from ShareStock at the weekend.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: IOG, Nigel Wray and Alliance Pharma and Canadian Overseas - there is a link

I start by mentioning tomorrow’s activities. many, many thanks to the 300+ folks who have donated. If I have not reminded you enough and you have forgotten to sponsor the rogue bloggers for Woodlarks there is still time HERE. Then I mention a knobhead called Robbie. Then it is onto Odey share overhangs, mentioning Shanta (SHG) en passant, IOG (IOG), Wray and Alliance Pharma (APH) in days gone by, Canadian Overseas Petroleum Limited (COPL) and finally two minnows on the brink of going under, I suspect: Deepverge (DVRG) and Microsaic (MSYS).

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Who will dare to say that Boards full of straight white men will be delivering better returns in 2022

I start with a question for you all ( except Nigel Wray and Nick Leslau): should the Mrs and I fix our mortage next April. Then onto Boohoo (BOO) and the timing of its next trading warning. For Boohoo also see Sosandar (SOS), etc, etc. Finally I wonder which academic will be brave enough to run an exercise correlating boardroom diversity with share price performance in 2022. You and I can work out what the result will be and also that there is no causal link but who will dare say it for exposes the boardroom diversity MUST be good line for the canard that it always has been.

Tom Winnifrith BONUS Bearcast: Dev Clever refuses to admit it and Nigel Wray won't want to hear it, but it is almost bust - a £180m nest of snakes

Dev Clever (DEV) has some very belated results out today. Its failure to update on current cash tells you it is almost bust. So too, I suggest, is its proposed RTO target Veative. And also Asimilar (ASLR) the listed company most of whose NAV is Dev related. I analyse the results and explain, not that Nigel Wray will want to hear this, why the Dev valuation is a joke. This whole mess is a £180 million nest of snakes.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: A duff Nigel Wray call & Parsley Box needs to 'fess ASAP

Then it is onto Gfinity (GFIN) and Nigel Wray, Guild ESports (GILD), Parlsey Box (MEAL), the markets and Ukraine, Chill Brands (CHLL) – the day’s biggest gainer (pro tem), a true dead cat bounce and Cineworld (CINE).  There is also a history lesson for GCSE student, our in house Euro loon, my friend, Jonathan Price.

Saracens RFC and City Index — does it really work?

As my friend Nigel Wray, who still owns a chunk of Saracens knows, I do not support his club. I have no great animosity towards it, the truth is that I rather fell out of love with rugby after it went professional. But there are a lot of folks out there who really do dislike Saracens, not only for winning so much silverware in recent years but also for the way it appears to have broken the rules on the wage cap to achieve this. Why mention this on a financial site?

Poor Jim Mellon - Master Investor blows another half a million, accounts just out

You may remember that Rivington Street had the chance to dramaticaly improve its finances by selling the t1ps businesses, including Master Investor, to Nigel Wray for half a million quid back in 2012. A deal was signed and agreed and then poor Jim Mellon was persuaded that this busines,s which had always been profitable with me in charge, would be so much more profitable if left in the hands of Richard “Gollum” Gill and a clown called Mark Robertson rather than useless old TW.  Sadly for Jim he believed Gollum et al.  It started losing cash at once and that dragged Rivinton over the edge. Nine years later we have the latest accounts for what is now the Master Investor Group which is wholly owned by Jim. Ouch.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: But for a fluke the ceiling would have fallen in on my head and on the cats

I discuss two developments at the Welsh Hovel. There is great news HERE but also a bit of a disaster which could have been fatal for the cats and bad for me. Then I look at backing proven failures or chaps who wave red flags mentioning Sensyne (SENS), Nigel Wray, me and a few others. That leads me on to the wall of silence from Central Copper Resources about its AIM IPO and me explaining what is really going on, notably at broker Brandon Hill. Finally I look at today’s news from Skinbiotherapeutics (SBTX) and where, as a result, I expect its shares to be at Christmas.

This gets more insane by the minute. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: it's all about management - Richard Gollum Gill, me, the late Stephen Dean, Nigel Wray, Oisin Fanning and Neill Ricketts

Have I judged Oisin Fanning of San Leon (SLE) by a different standard to, say, Neill Ricketts of Versarien (VRS)? Sure. Would I not judge, for instance, Cheryl Cole by a different standard in the looks department than, say, Diane Abbott? Yes I would. And I bet Cheryl is also better at singing, counting and more or less everything else than Ms Abbott too. Management is key to it all in the world of investing as I discuss today.

Forgive this annual dose of schadenfreude - Master Investor accounts out

I have long since stopped blaming Jim Mellon. He is more of a victim of bad advice than I was in this matter. My old company had the chance to sell the Master Investor show and its profitable financial publishing business to Nigel Wray. At the last minute, Jim was persuaded by staff, notably Richard “Gollum” Gill, that it should not sell and investors were told that problems were down to the old management (i.e me) and that new management was turning it around.  Wind forward eight years.

R4E – shareholder screwing by Wray, Potts & Management - reasons to despair of AIM No 67

On June 29 this year, just over a month ago, the management of Reach4Entertainment (R4E) told us that despite the lockdown of the London and New York theatres it serviced, it was sitting, as a result of prudent cash management, on net funds of £12 million – almost thrice the market cap. Today, 5 weeks later, we are told the company is leaving AIM and worse is to come. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: a Totally bogus balance sheet & results statement

I then launch into a heartfelt defence of Roger Lawson of Sharesoc over what appears to be an undeclared related party deal at the organisation that campaigns for improved corporate governance and transparency. I chatted to Nigel Wray, Britain’s Buffett, at length today about the markets, individual shares, the coronavirus, the shape of the recession, consumer attitudes and most interestingly about commercial property, which he knows a bit about. I also discuss Sosandar (SOS), Finncrap (FCAP), Arden (ARDN), WH Ireland (WHI) and other Nomad/brokers and when the FCA will have to step in to check their solvency. Finally a few words on the Government’s daft £330 billion loan scheme.

Would you Adam & Eve it – today’s nightmare for Neil Woodford

As it happens I am in the process of buying a number of new mattresses for the house I have rebuilt in Greece. And it seems a remarkably simple process buying what is a commodity product. When my friend Nigel Wray says his mattress company Simba is revolutionising the market I cough and change the subject. But he is not the only one who thinks that mattresses need “disrupting”.  Natch, Neil Woodford, the UK's most conceited fund manager, also thinks that, like washing machines, mattresses are ripe for a revolution.  He owns just under 30% of Eve Sleep (EVE) shares of which are now in free fall.

Republished: Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Guess which stockmarket system flagged Quindell as one of the 11 cheapest value plays on AIM

Darren uploaded yesterday's podcast by mistake becuase he is a fucking idiot. I am considering his future and mine tonight. Here now is today's podcast. To tip Quindell before Gotham City and I started to expose it was perhaps understandable. But to single it out as a stunning value investment afterwards? Who could have been so fecking dumb? As you can see HERE it was the same system also that thought Globo was a cracking investment when some of us very publicly said it was a fraud. Which system could be so bad? Step forward Ed Croft and Stockopedia and he says that Nigel Wray invests in "sucker stocks"?. I explain why Ed's system is bound to have some horrible failures and miss a stack of big winners.  In this podcast I also look at Vitesse (VIS), Tern (TERN), Inspirit (INSP) which has a mega spoof today and Online Blockchain (OBC) where I am just a confused old dinosaur.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast - why Ed Croft is wrong to label Nigel Wray a sucker, can't count to 40 & arrived at a bogus conclusion on correct data

In this podcast I look back at a very valid point made by Dr Hon at UK Investor on a cancer still at the heart of the City. I look at AIQ (AIQ), San Leon (SLE) and Paragon Entertainment (PEL) - another Finncap debacle. Then I turn to Ed Croft and UK Investor who was rude to me ( who cares) as he over-ran his allotted time and pretended otherwise by slating me. He also called Nigel Wray a sucker for his investments. Ed: how rich are you? How many AIM stocks have you backed in a major way where you could have m,ade 100* your money? But I am sure you are right and Wray is a sucker. And then Ed presented data which though accurate allowed him to leap to a totally wrong conclusion. If I was scoring his thesis I explain why I'd have to give it a fail. Or as that is now on campuses today a 2:1. Unlike Ed I did not insult someone else on the main stage on their big day as that would have been rude but his nonsense needs correcting.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast with Paul Scott from the UK Investor Show 2018

Background. Last year Paul turned up late for the UK Investor Show bearcast as he had gone to the wrong venue. This year I felt safe as two hours before the bearcast I knew Paul was due on the main stage with Paul Jourdan & Nigel Wray and he would not screw that up would he? Er.... As I walked off from the previous session I was told Scott was running 10 minutes late and so I agreed to start his session with Wray and Jourdan for him. 35 minutes later I was still there, over-running by a few minutes but managing well ( I thought). Still no sign of Scott. Anyhow in this bearcast I start off with five minutes on Blockchain with Malcolm Palle of Coinsilium (COIN) then it is onto Scott who seems not to understand that a fact is something that has happened, it is derived from the Latin.  Opinions are not facts! Enjoy!

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast - in awe of Cynical Bear and all my colleagues and feeling like a prat ( or not) over the AIQ scandal

I will see many of you at UK INvestor today. This was recorded last night as I struggled with my Neil Woodford talk. On that note I praise Cynical Bear for his amazing work on exposing Nomates but also all my colleagues at ShareProphets as working with them (even Darren) really can be good fun. I look like a bit of a prat selling my AIQ (AIQ) at 45p but a 130p share price at the close on Friday is a scandal and benefits no-one. I discuss what an outrage this is in detail and loom back to a similar bout of madness involving my pals Nick Leslau and Nigel Wray back in the dot com era. That was market madness, this is - I think - a genuine scandal.

FairPoint to go bust, three lessons to learn and a classic outburst from the UK's top share blogger

First up I must congratulate Paul Scott for sticking with and, I think averaging down, on Revolution Bars (RBG) which earlier this week received a tentative 200p share offer. Paul was right and I was wrong. It happens. I guess my, almost teetotal existence and his extensive field work gave him the edge. Only kidding - it was a great call by Paul and one orf the reasons why he is such a great share blogger. I am sure his session with Nigel Wray at UK Investor 2018 (as well as his live bearcast with me) will justify attendance on its own. But just as a reminder we do not get it all right, here is a classic Scott twitter outburst, regarding Fairpoint (FRP) which said that it would be calling in administrators today.

R4E - Very good news on the banking front: At up to 1.6p BUY

For months, shares in R4E (R4E) have been held back because it was in technical breach of the covenants on its bank debt. We never expected the bank to pull with Nigel Wray and Johnny Hon owning c50% of the equity and standing behind the firm. But some BB savants knew better...they always do.

A One Off: Meet and talk 1-2-1 with Nigel Wray, the man dubbed Britain's Buffett only at UK Investor on April 1

Normally Nigel Wray turns up at UK Investor, talks and leaves. This year - our 15th anniversary party - is different. He will be there from start to finish and when not on stage that opens up a unique opportunity for those attending on April 1. For more than 40 years, Nigel , the man dubbed Britain's Buffett, has been a stockmarket legend for his ability to generate stellar returns not by wild gambling on mining punts or biotech start ups but by rigid value investing. Like the Original Buffett, the Sage of Omaha, Wray is a bottom up value investor who buys and holds. Would you like to know what he thinks is the cheapest share in London? Would you like a one to one chat with Nigel?

Electric Jukebox backed by Nigel Wray & Cheryl Crow - sorry BB I am going to pass

The Sunday Times front page splashed with news of a forthcoming AIM IPO in the music streaming world, Electric Jukebox. Chris Akers vehicle Yolo (YOLO) has today raised £2.5 million and is investing £1.4 million in EJ so maybe that is the IPO the paper refers to. But for me this is a big miss and here's why.

The Mrs heads home from Greece - life without her is very different, I'm back at the Hovel

British Airways staff were again brilliant today. On Saturday I arrived at Kalamata airport with a barely mobile father and weak step mother. Within minutes a cute airline lady had helped me get a wheelchair for my father and i was told my job was over. The lady put them at the front of the line and I had nothing more to do. Today it was the turn of the Mrs. We arrived and the small departure lounge was again heaving with lobster pink Northern Europeans forming long lines to check in for flights to London and Paris.

I found a different cute airline lady and said that my wife was heavily pregnant, as she is, and within minutes she was again at the head of the queue leaving dozens of the lobster pink Brits and froggies fuming behind her. Then she was through passport control and was off and I headed back to town to face another three to four weeks at the Greek Hovel with just the snakes and rats for company.

When the Mrs is here I am on holiday so I only work 3-4 hours a day at my PC and I do no manual labour at all. I enjoy three meals a day and more than the odd drink. "After all we are on holiday" say I as I order another ouzo. I get to sleep on clean sheet in an air conditioned hotel and enjoy swims in luxury pools. The Mrs is paying and it is a treat. I enjoy my hols with the Mrs. We talk, we plan, we discuss. Life without the Mrs is very different.

FINAL CHANCE - Dont forget to hear the Real master investors on Saturday April 30 in London

This weekend is all about the London Marathon but in just SIX DAYS time a galaxy of legendary investors will be speaking at UK Investor Show. This is not a platform for share rampers based in dodgy offshore tax havens but a chance to hear men and woman who are simply the best. He will be joined on the main stage by Nigel Somerville to show what went on and how the City can be tackled.

All the star writers from ShareProphets will be there and we still have a few complimentary tickets to meet them at the QE2 Centre in Westminster on April 30th and to hear in action a star studded line up including Ed Croft, Mark Slater, Evil Knievil, Nigel Wray, Adam Reynolds, Dominic Frisby, Vin Murria & Amanda Van Dyke.

Fewer than 100 seats left (of 2000) for UK Investor on April 18 – book now!

News of new speakers at the UK Investor Show including legendary fund manager Mark Slater has seen a surge in demand for seats for the show of the year on April 18. There are now fewer than 100 of the 2000 seats left for grabs so if you want to attend book your seat now at www.UKInvestorShow.com

One with the bears (Evil Knievil, Matt Earl, Kevin Ashton) and one with the value investors (Nigel Wray, Paul Jourdan and Paul Scott) both on the main stage. I have a side room presentation on Sefton where I name some names who need investigation and then a main stage Sheriff slot with Amanda Van Dyke and Malcolm Stacey.

There are also main stage presentations by:

*Luke Johnson of Pizza Express, C4 and The Sunday Times on why City research is so useless and who are the new regulators

*Saved Javid MP on taking the City and business forward

*Ben Edelman with more bad news for blinks and other shocks from the Web Sheriff

*Ed Croft of Stockopedia on stock picking to make money with Thierry Laduguie and Chris Bailey

*Tech stars Stephen Streater, Lorne Daniel, Jason Drummond and Paul Kavanagh on making money in tech

*Amanda van Dyke and David Lenigas lead a session on making Money from resource stocks

To book your tickets go to www.UKInvestorShow.com

There are also 14 special 1 hour analysts sessions on topics ranging from shells (Adam Reynolds) to mining ( Amanda again), to biotech (Steve Moore) and tech (Lorne Daniel again).

And there are 110 PLC stands with 70 of the PLCs also doing 20 minute presentations on the day.

And 25 of the UK’s top share bloggers will be taking it in turn to man the Bloggers café where you can chat informally to any of them

This will be my best and most controversial show ever and that is why there are now fewer than 100 of the 2000 tickets still going. All 2000 tickets will be sent out next week so to book yours go now to www.UKinvestorshow

Its Time to book in for UK Investor Show on 18th April 2015 – 25% discount offer

As the leaves start to turn brown you may not be thinking about next April but we are as we plan the biggest and best UK Investor Show ever. The speaker line-up gets more impressive by the day and already 90 of the 110 Growth companies attending have booked in – and I am delighted that there are a raft of new PLCs attending, and almost as delighted that some of those who attend every show are NOT attending!

So some things stay the same. I shall be there but will be doing different sessions in smaller rooms – such as the Sefton story with Dan Levi – and a PLC fraud session with a special guest. Nigel Wray, Mark Slater, Evil and Lucian Miers are back as are Vin Murria and Ben Edelman. But we are mixing up the speakers with new names such as Jason Drummond and Cassandra Harris on tech and Luke Johnson is also on board as well.

After UK Investor Show 2014 Sell out Triumph – “early bird” 2015 tickets are now on sale

The UK Investor Show 2014 yesterday was a sell-out show which attendees seem universally to have enjoyed. The 90 growth companies attending say that they enjoyed engaging with some quite spirited investors and everyone had a ball. For me the highlights were:

1. Making the Queen of Tech, Vin Murria laugh not once but twice on stage. That should be a career high to retire on. I found her session with CEOs Stephen Streater, John  Wisbey and Marcus Hanke utterly riveting.

2. Value investing with Nigel Wray, Ed Croft, Paul Kavanagh and Chris Bailey really was very different to what we have done before in this area. All were smooth, self-deprecating but really insightful.

3. In the shareholder activism session Paul Scott & Roger Lawson did not hold back while our “ordinary investors” Nigel and Richard showed how anyone can make a difference on the AIM Cesspit.

4. Amanda van Dyke’s legs in the mining session.  The Goddess was in fire. In fact that whole session was again illuminating with Amanda showing she is a hell of a lot more than a pretty face and Dom Frisby letting tip in a way that makes me think he should join shareholder activism next year. Should I tip a gold stock or two? On balance not yet.

5.  Ben Edelman was a real showman but also a geek who knows his stuff. I really wish Blinkx had taken up my offer to respond to Ben as he made some really massive points.

6.  The bears seemed united on Globo. We had laughs all the way but Matt Earl, Lucian Miers and Evil also made some very valid points.

7. The after show party for speakers and gold ticket holders. The winner of the financial celebrity make a pizza competition was Ed Croft followed by Paul Scott (but he cheated with his training in Domino’s). Sandra Spencer…don’t give up your day job. Paul Scott has tweeted that I was a “charming” person. I shall be consulting my lawyer

BONUS Session announced for UK Investor show: “UK House Prices will Crash by 2020”

Surely 12 sessions and 44 speakers is enough for the UK Investor Show on April 5 in Westminster? Well it is but we had forgotten something: UK residential property. Problem fixed – we have squeezed in an additional debate with a bull and a bear.

You can read full details of the 44 speaker line-up headlined by Ben Edelman, Nigel Wray, Vin Murria, David Lenigas, Terry Smith, Mark Slater, Evil Knievil & Lucian Miers HERE

The debate is between two libertarian thinkers trained in economics. Richard Poulden will argue that there will be no crash. I shall argue that there will be one.

This is our sixth annual debate and the score is currently 3-2 to Richard.

Our debates are informal if information packed. Hence we kick off this one at 9.20 AM as a sort of warm up for the main talks which start at 9.50 AM.  Doors open at 9 AM.

The show is as of today 81% sold out. If you want to get a ticket (while stocks last) you can book HERE

Ben Edelman – The man called the Web Sheriff by Bloomberg to headline at UK Investor Show on April 5 – Get your ticket now

The big news today is that a true mega star has agreed to fly to Britain for one day only to headline at The UK Investor Show in London on April 5. Meet Ben Edelman. If you are a Blinkx (BLNX) shareholder you will already have done so – you have lost more than 50% of your money since he produced a detailed report on the company.

Professor Edelman will make a rare London appearance as the headline speaker at The UK Investor Show on April 5 in Westminster

Edelman shot to prominence in the UK with his recent analysis of Blinkx.  Edelman argued that Blinkx adware sneaks onto users’ computers, violates regulatory requirements, and overcharges advertisers.  Blinkx denies the allegations. Its share price continues to slide.

Much of Edelman’s recent work examines the activities of Google.  In 2010, he uncovered the Google Toolbar continuing to track users’ web browsing even after users asked that the toolbar be disabled and even after the toolbar disappeared from view.  His most recent article examines Google’s Mobile Application Distribution Agreement terms – previously-secret documents that he says impede competition by alternatives apps and services, and drive up prices to consumers.

Recently labelled the “web sheriff” by Bloomberg, Edelman will be speaking on the questionable business practices of a variety of Internet companies, ranging from giants like Google to smaller firms including Blinkx.

Edelman joins a 42 strong main stage line up on April 5th including Nigel Wray, Terry Smith, Vin Murria, Evil Knievil, Mark Slater, Dominic Frisby, bear raiders Lucian Miers and Matt Earl and blogging supremo Paul Scott.

A full list can be found at www.UKinvestorshow.com/speakers

Edelman is quoted as saying: “My visits to London are all too rare, but the British market has led the world in many kinds of advertising integrity - I look forward to showing an informed audience a variety of controversial behaviours, including some material not previously seen elsewhere.”

We have now sold more than 60% of the ordinary tickets for the event and all bar a handful of the golden tickets which come with bonus features such as an invitation to the after show champagne party at Maribelle’s. You can get your tickets at www.ukinvestorshow.com/tickets

And there are still a few surprises left for the show, notably on the shareholder activism front. Watch this space.

This year I shall not be compering the event – that baton passes to my old friend co-presenter on Show Me The Money, Louise Noel. Okay Louise was the main presenter I was just there for my (then) looks. Okay to talk about the market knowledgably. I digress. The fact that I am not on stage so much means that I plan to be able to join friends such as Malcolm Stacey, Brokerman Dan, Doc Holiday, Steve Moore, Malcolm Palle of Mining Maven and others in the bloggers café, chatting to anyone who is interested about shares that may interest them. As well as tweeting away #ukinvestorshow – I hope to meet many of you there.

But the star attractions are others: Wray, Lucian Miers, Matt Earl, Evil, Slater, Vin Murria, Amanda Van Dyke, Dom Frisby, Brian Basham and now of course Ben Edelman.

On that note I hope that if you have not done so already you book a ticket for the show and look forward to seeing you on April 5 in Westminster: www.ukinvestorshow.com/tickets

Out today – The 49 Golden Rules for Making Money from Shares (my new book) – 500 free copies on offer

I started discussing this e-book late autumn with my friend Stephen Eckett. So it has been a long time a coming but, I reckon, it is worth the wait. The 49 Golden Rules for Making Money from Shares was published as an e-book today. It can be bought for £10.25 on Amazon but we have 500 free copies (now only 460 left) to give away on a first come first served basis.

Most investment books seem to be large enough to keep the front door open and while some contain gems it is hard to find them amid the verbiage. The aim here is to produce a shorter guide which simply cuts to the chase. I hope that it will provide food for thought for everyone from beginner to expert but whoever you are it should be quick and easy to read and digest.

I do not claim to get every investment call right. Over the years I have got it right far more than I have got it wrong but I freely admit to some bad decisions. I hope that as I approach 25 years writing about shares I have learned from my mistakes.

Part of that learning process comes from listening to folks who really know what they are doing and learning from them. As such I should thank for their assistance, at one point or another over almost 25 years, in helping me distil my ideas or in providing some ideas themselves either wittingly or unwittingly ( by talking to an attentive me), men such as  Nigel Wray, Mark Slater, Jim Mellon, Malcolm Burne and the great Clive Wolman.

With every rule I aim to be short, sharp and to the point. This is a book you can read all in one go or just a few rules at a time. I offer up as an example Rule 21:

Do not buy shares on the basis of long term forecasts in a rapidly changing industry

The shares trade on a PE of 240 but do not worry, says the company, on the basis of broker forecasts we trade on a 2019 PE of 4 so we are cheap?  Hmmmm. How is it that the company is able to predict such explosive growth? Simple it has a new technology which will change the way the world operates. That may indeed be the case but in any industry where technology is rapidly evolving what is new and market leading today or next year could well be superseded by an even newer and more exciting development in the future.

This applies most often when it comes to looking at technology stocks. One simply cannot extrapolate sales growth patterns from a small base going out many years when an industry is by its nature dynamic.

Of course those 2019 forecasts might be right but frankly forecasting out six years is not forecasting but guessing even on the basis of what is already known, let alone what is not known (the potential launch of an even better new product). Buying shares on the basis of long term forecasts in a rapidly changing sector is not investment but pure speculation and it usually ends in tears.

Ends.

There are 48 other golden rules where that came from. I hope that folks enjoy this book and find it useful.

You can buy the book for £10.25 on Amazon HERE

But we have 500 copies (actually now only 460) to give away on a first come first served basis thanks to a kind sponsor. You can bag your free copy while stocks last HERE

Best wishes

Monday 30th: Today’s the last day to book your discounted early bird ticket to the show of the year – UK Investor Show

It’s the last day to get a 50% discounted early bird ticket to the investment show of the year – UK Investor 2014 on April 5.

We know that other investor shows are free. They have weak speakers and the sort of companies that pitch up to present are of little interest to me or you. On April 5 in  the UK’s top location, the QE2 Centre Westminster the UK Investor Show will boast an all start line up of speakers and already 39 of the 80 companies set to man a booth but also present are booked in.

This is a show for serious investors and we do not want time wasters attending and clogging up the aisles: so we make a small charge to attend.

You can buy an ordinary ticket (normally £12 inc VAT) or a golden ticket (£60 – and which brings a range of perks including a place at a champagne reception afterwards with key speakers and CEOs) at half price until Monday midnight (TONIGHT) ONLY at the www.UKInvestorshow.com website.

So who is speaking?  We have a value investor panel led by Ed Croft of Stockopedia, Nick Leslau and Nigel Wray plus Paul Kavanagh of Killick with 1 more tbc. There is a gold panel led by Dominic Frisby and Amanda Van Dyke with Richard Poulden and analyst turned CEO Matt Suttcliffe with 2 tbc.  There is a bears panel lead by Evil and Lucian Miers with 2 tbc.

Terry Smith ( a real hero of mine) will do a stand alone talk on how to make money from Emerging Markets.

There is a bloggers panel led by myself with Brokerman Dan, Doc Holiday and 2 tbc. There is an oil lunch panel (with free sandwich) with David Lenigas, Matt Lofgren, Paul Atherley and 2 tbc. Mark Slater will be flying solo. There is a traders panel led by Clem Chambers and Alpesh Patel with 2 tbc. And there is one more solo speaker of whom more next week.

You have just a few hours to book your early bird half price ticket and can do so HERE

There are also big name breakout sessions for 100 people where the 75 gold ticket holders get priority booking. These include Amanda Van Dyke, Roger Lawson of Share Soc and Evil Knievil ( with me)

You have just a few hours to book your early bird half price ticket and can do so HERE

And then there are the companies each of whom will man a stand but also do a 20 minute presentation in a smaller side room. The list of those attending grows by the day and can be found at www.UKInvestorshow.com but already includes: EMED, EnablesIT, Stanley Gibbons, Inspirit, Nostra Terra, ECR Minerals, Conroy Gold, 1Spatial, Leni Gas & Oil, Alexander Mining, Red Rock Resources, AfriAg, Regency Mines, @UK, ADVFN, Alliance Pharma, Ariana Resources, GLI Finance, Asher Resources, Fastnet Oil & Gas, Kibo Mining, Eurasia Mining, Leyshon Resources, Noricum Gold, Ortac Resources, Symphony Environmental, Killick & Co, Mechan Controls, Minoan, Sound Oil and of course Woodlarks. More companies will be announced every week…

Hundreds of serious investors have booked already. I hope that you will join them and to see you on April 5th in Westminster but remember to get a 50% discount on your ticket you need to book now on a secure online form HERE.

Best wishes

Why directors and investors are conflicted - it's about misalingment

The company is delighted to announce that it has issued shares to a) grow the business by acquisition b) to provide working capital to grow the business c) in response to institutional demand or d) all of the above.  Very rarely does a company say that it is issuing shares because it is running out of cash. The reality is that this is all too often the reason.  And some companies seem rather keener on issuing shares than others. The reason: management and shareholder misalignment.

Nigel Wray always bangs on about this and he is right. When you invest in a business you want the CEO and other key personnel to want exactly the same thing as you which is, if we cut to the chase, the share price to go up with a few dividends as a bonus.

Now it is very rare for a PLC director to have no skin in the game at all via shares. When that is the case you really have to ask why? However if you skim through the annual reports of all too many AIM companies you will see that the shareholding of the main men (and women, lest I be accused of sexism) is, in absolute terms, not great. And relative to their total compensation it can often be trivial.

Exclusive; Nigel Wray ( Britain's Buffett) adding to Alliance Pharma holdings and why:

Alliance Pharma (APH) is in the news today as it has announced an $11.5 million (£7.5 million) acquisition of all existing rights to the ‘Syntometrine’ drug from industry major Novartis

We can reveal that Nigel Wray – the man known as Britain’s Buffett – has on the back of this added to his material stake in the company. Wray argues

Nigel Wray, Nick Leslau and me - video from UKInvestor Show

This was in many ways my favourite part of UKInvestor Show 2013. Together with two good friends we chatted 100% without rehearsal on UK residential and commercial property, the death of the High street, the UK economy, Alliance Pharma, Domino's Pizza, share prices, Margaret Thatcher and much more. Leslau and Wray are always inspirational for me. And I had a ball.

UK Investor Show – I hope that you had fun: a few thoughts

I am still completely wiped out. It is incredibly draining doing presentation after presentation and half way through the post event celebrations I fell asleep (ok I had enjoyed a few drinks as well) but I still feel utterly drained. And so once I have ruined a few other weekends by breaking news of a planning oil company merger involving a well-known name I think I am off to sleep again.

Thanks for the many emails from folks who said that they enjoyed the show. On balance so did I. I thought that the talks were more interesting than for many a year. They have been put on video and so will start to go up from Tuesday in a variety of places. But suffice to say you should register now at www.shareprophets.com to catch many of them.

The location was not ideal. Not least that in order to feed my addiction I had to scrounge a spare packet of Marlboro Light from David Lenigas who had thoughtfully come well supplied. But ADVFN and I know enough now and the show was a success and so we are now planning for UKInvestor 2014. Watch this space – we will announce the date soon.

Highlights for me?

The young man who now writes tips appearing disguised in dark glasses to gain entry (not having booked a ticket). When spotted by Steve Moore, he claimed that he was at Excel to go to the International Cake show down the hall and made a swift exit.

Nick Leslau and Nigel Wray – optimistic about the UK economy and as a double act far more powerful than as individuals. A lot of wisdom was shared by the pair.

Losing the debate with Richard Poulden once again. I am now 3-2 down but I really will try to do slides next year and stage a comeback.

Mark Slater. The obligatory dirty joke but the quality of his analysis of the markets and of individual stocks (three of which have been tipped by myself and Steve) was incredible.

Nigel Farage – unscripted, lucid, funny and on most issues bang on the money. I had a good chat with him and Chris Booker after the event and he is a very funny and pleasant chap. C Booker’s Thatcher tribute was bang on the money and nailed a number of leftie canards.

Above all I really enjoyed meeting so many of you who attended (particularly, I should say, David from Oxford). Thanks for all the kind words and I hope that you enjoyed the day. On stage I had more fun than I have had for years. I can say what I like these days and I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I actually enjoyed the day in a way that I have not enjoyed MI days for a long time. With the speakers, stand holders and the audience I felt far more at home than I can remember being for years.

The home team from RMPC & ADVFN staging our first show should be thanked, notably John W, Clem, Fiona and especially Mike Hodges and from our side Darren, Nigel, Sarah, Steve, Robert Sutherland Smith and Martha. It was their first run at this, the second time is always easier.

So thank you to all who attended. ADVFN and RMPC starts work on Monday on UK Investor 2014 which will be bigger and different. I hope to see even more of you there then.

Tom

PS I should mention one other highlight. The after show pool games. I defeated Andrew Bell of Red Rock. Zak Mir fluked a victory against me. And then it was the final: The UKIP volunteers against myself & Zak. They had been trying to persuade Zak to sign up to UKIP although he is obviously a bit too right wing for them. And so with the prize being that if Zak and I won they would allow him to become the party’s immigration spokesman (Zak’s views are unprintably stern on this matter, making Evil seem like a total Guardian reader) we played.  The bad news for UKIP is that Zak and I won.

Change of Speaker Line Up at UKINvestor Show this Saturday – in honour of Margaret Thatcher

We are lucky to have a speaker already lined up at the UK’s top investor show which takes place this Saturday April 13th who knew Margaret Thatcher well. In fact we have several but in light of the sad demise of Britain’s greatest Prime Minister we have moved Christopher Booker, the founder of Private Eye and celebrated Sunday Telegraph columnist to the main stage during the afternoon to talk about “The Margaret Thatcher I knew – nearly always right in the end.”

I chatted to Booker – who is my uncle and godfather - this morning and our reflections on the Iron Lady covered her Euro scepticism, the treachery of her colleagues, the lie that she supported apartheid, her conversion from a supporter of global warming theory to becoming an ardent global warming sceptic and many other issues. Booker will cover how and why her views changed on these and other topics and how our leaders today might perhaps reflect on this.

The revised speaker line-up on our main stage is now:

10 AM Opening Remarks
10.10-11 AM Nigel Wray & Nick Leslau
11.00 – 11.45 AM – Tom Winnifrith with bear raider Lucian Miers
11.45-11.55 – the short debate: Is AIM doomed Tom Winnifrith vs Richard Poulden
11.55-12.40 – Comedian and gold guru Dominic Frisbey on gold
1.40-2.35 PM – The Traders session: Clem Chambers, Alpesh Patel, Zak Mir, Evil Knievil and John Piper
2.35-3.15 – Christopher Booker
3.45 – 4.30 Mark Slater
4.30-5.15 Nigel Farage MEP ( who will I am sure also mention the Iron Lady)

We still have a handful of tickets going for the show due to late cancellations. If you wish to attend email your postal address with postcode and how many tickets you require to [email protected] and the tickets will be despatched first class at once.

I look forward to seeing you on Saturday 13th April at Excel.

UKInvestor Show – Prizes, People and Updates – For April 13

The UK’s only serious one day investor conference is now less than three weeks away. Details can be found at www.UKinvestorshow.combut the final touches are now being put in place for what seems set to be an explosive day. If you have registered for a ticket it will by now have landed with you. A bit more on tickets later but first to the prizes on offer for those attending.

The show is at Excel and doors will open at 9 am sharp. The day ends at 5 PM, In between you can mingle among the dozens of stands manned by PLC CEOs chatting to them about whatever you wish. A full (reasonably up to date) list is on our website www.UKInvestorshow.com or you can listen to a series of talks by investment legends, folks who really are Master Investors, such as Mark Slater, Lucian Miers, Dominic Frisby, Nick Leslau and Nigel Wray.

Prizes?

The first talk starts just after 10 am and is a three way session with property legend and secret millionaire Nick Leslau and his long time business partner Britain’s Buffett Nigel Wray with me in the middle. I get to choose most of the questions but… five of the questions come from the audience and win prizes.

We will send out an email shortly to all ticket holders with a short form on it asking for your questions for Nick & Nigel. Simply print that off fill in your question and when you arrive at the Excel centre drop the question off at the Real Man stand before 10 AM.

If your question is picked a bottle of premium English wine from the Chapel Down vineyard is yours.

More prizes? How fat is Evil Knievil?

Well a second anyway. On that form we will also ask you to guess the combined weight in stone and pounds of Evil Knievil, myself and Zak Mir. I give you a hint: - Evil is almost half of the total on his own. Entries in Kilogrammes will automatically be disqualified. Imperial only.

And there are more prizes to come. We will send out details with the next email.

For full details on the all-star speaker line-up and on the companies presenting go to www.UKinvestorshow.com

One last favour? All tickets were sent to those who booked last week. If you have not received a ticket to the show please email [email protected] ASAP and we will send one before Easter.
And if you have got a ticket but cannot use it please let us know. We have now been able to allocate tickets to most folks on the waiting list but there are still a few waiting. If you are not using your ticket let us know so that we can give it to someone who wants to attend.

If you wish to attend and have not booked we cannot guarantee that there will be a place on April 13th for you but you can apply to join the waiting list at www.UKinvestorshow.com

Tom Winnifrith
PS Off for a run now to see if I can lose a couple of pounds and push Evil’s share of the combined weight to more than 50%

Weekend Video Postcard Number 32

I think sound and vision nailed once again. I am finally getting the hang of this.  I am meant to be celebrating St Patrick’s Day with some Irish-for-a-day folk which means just mindless drinking. Since they were not Irish yesterday they will not understand why there is nothing to celebrate today. And so I may dodge that for some more writing. Pro tem here is the video postcard for this week

On the Agenda

  1. The end of an era for Irish rugby –see also my sad thoughts on that HERE
  2. The Budget – I do not expect much
  3. The markets
  4. Nigel Wray again - ref Alliance Pharma
  5. Cyprus, the Euro and theft
  6. Leaving the EU
  7. UKInvestor Show on April 13th

Approximate Running time 10 minutes

Chatting to Nigel Wray – Telecom Plus still a buy

Known as Britain’s Buffett, Nigel Wray is one of the UK’s most successful investors of the past three decades. I wrote last week about how he had sold £25 million shares in Domino’s Pizza (DOM) at 525p (share he paid 36p for). I am not sure that Wray was right to sell then but you cannot really argue with such a Master Investor. Wray’s only other holding in a FTSE 250 listed stock is Telecom Plus (TEP) – which, since my last article has published an in-line trading statement.

2.       Nigel Wray

3.       Domino’s Pizza

5.       The inevitability of a house price crash

6.       The next tip on the Nifty Fifty (see here)

New Look Tom Winnifrith and New Look TomWinnifrith.com

You were getting used to the scruffy look. Well both I and my blog have had a makeover today. Me? I am not in court for another libel trial. I am off to a City lunch in Chiswell Street as the guest of Nigel Wray. It is a sporting lunch. As there will no doubt be a lot of chatter about English rugby in triumphalist terms I shall have to bite my lip. Please can we talk about English cricket instead?

Textpattern CMS

And TomWinnifrith.com – well what can I say? I hope that it is easier to read and easier to find your way around.

It is now easy to tweet or email a link to an article to all your mates and also to do the same via Reddit (not that I have the foggiest what Reddit is). I really would not discourage you from doing all three things. Go on…have a go.

I hope that you like the new look. The old one was okay to launch when this was just a sanity project for me. Now this blog is a central part of my life and I want it to look as smart as its owner.

Dominos Pizza - should you follow Nigel Wray and sell?

I wrote positively towards the end of last month on then just released 2012 results from Domino’s Pizza Group (DOM) – commenting that “as a core mid cap growth and income holding the company continues not to put a foot wrong and at 525p the shares remain undervalued”. However, a couple of days later the company announced significant share sales by non-executive Chairman, Stephen Hemsley, and non-executive director Nigel Wray. Despite this the shares are now 573p. So should you follow Hemsley and my old friend Wray and sell a few?

UKInvestorShow: All tickets Gone and Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Those who are not registered to receive my twice weekly Tomograph Newsletter may have missed this news but on Friday, ADVFN issued a regulatory release announcing that all 2500 seats at the UK Investor Show on April 13 had already been booked. We know other shows are struggling to fill seats but the speaker line-up at UKInvestor Show is so awesome that a full house was never in doubt. Wray, Slater, Leslau, Evil, Lucian, Frisbey, Van Dyke, Booker, etc simply do not appear at other shows. Anyhow, thanks for booking. I do ask one favour.

If you go to www.UKInvestorshow.com you will see that we are now running a waiting list for tickets. Already there are almost a hundred names on that list. If you have booked a ticket to UKInvestor show but cannot now attend please do let me know by emailing me at [email protected] so that I can reallocate that seat to someone who wants to attend but is now on the waiting list.

In advance, many thanks.

When we first announced that Nigel Farage would be one of our 25 speakers at the show I know that certain folk at my former employer scoffed at the idea. Heck, I knew – and ticket bookings reflect this – that he is not the major draw but I wanted him there since I am a UKIP sympathiser. Hey ho, I see that Nigel is now speaking at the other show. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I somehow think that our headline speakers of Messrs Wray, Leslau, Slater, etc will not be making a double appearance at the other, smaller, event.

Incidentally having already announced the first 30 PLC stands at UKInvestor Show we will be announcing the next 20 very shortly. Watch this space.

UKInvestor Show – April 13th – just 50 seats left

That is the news as of tonight. On a day when two more PLCs signed up to present (Ariana Resources and The Innovation Group) we did our sums and there are now just 50 seats out of 2,500 left unallocated for what is clearly the UK’s leading investment show.

It is hardly surprising that two months before the event, nearly all the seats are allocated given the all star speaker line up:

Nigel Wray, Nigel Farage, Mark Slater, Evil Knievil, Lucian Miers, Nick Leslau, Richard Poulden, myself, Dominic Frisbey, Clem Chambers, Amanda Van Dyke, Christopher Booker, Mike Hall, Roger Lawson, Simon Denham, John Piper, David Buik, Steve Moore, Robert Sutherland Smith, Paul Atherley, Jan Nelson, Ronald Duncan, Craig Brown and the list goes on and on…

And with companies booking in at a rate of one a day almost 50 of the 80 PLC stands are now reserved and you can check out a list of some of the big name exhibitors HERE.

And so what are you doing on April 13th? At some stage tomorrow we will close the lists and start running a “reserve” ticket list for folks who MIGHT get a seat if we have a cancellation. That is a MIGHT.

We have just 50 seats left to allocate. You can still grab one of them if you book now HERE.

I hope to see you all on April 13.

Weekend Video Postcard Number 20

As per request the weekend video postcard is back. I found my camera, my tripod and I hope that this all works well enough – damn seem to have goofed on lighting again. I am out of practice. A simple few thoughts to (re) start with & no crowing about the rugby in case Olivia watches.

On the Agenda

1. Bull versus Bear the markets debate short term
2. Longer term – what inflation must mean, a more bearish tone.
3. The dynamics of new media
4. Steve Moore, ex senior writer at t1ps.com joins me working on the Nifty Fifty – the old t1ps team is now 100% reunited on our new website
5. Leslau vs Wray with me in the middle. More on UKInvestor Show where fewer than 500 seats now remain.

New Year Resolution - Book your seat on April 13 TODAY

We can always learn more about how to be better investors by learning from the experts. If your New Year Resolution is to do that then you need to book a ticket today to meet real Master Investors on April 13th in London at the UKInvestor Show, organised by ADVFN. The speakers are not career stockbrokers or rent a quote journalists but men who have actually made hundreds of millions of pounds by buying and selling the right assets. True master investors.

You can book your free ticket HERE

Leading the line-up are Nick Leslau and Nigel Wray. Nick was one of TV’s secret millionaires and is probably the most successful property investor of his generation. The firm he runs owns Madame Tussauds, thousands of pubs and much else. Over many years he has worked closely with Nigel Wray, aka Britain’s Buffet , the master of small cap investing. Nigel is the biggest shareholder in Domino’s Pizzza (LSE:DOM), having bought in at 36p – the shares are now c£5 – and is also a big holder of Alliance Pharma (LSE:APH) another stock worth watching.

Next up is Mark Slater, son of Jim and an extraordinarily successful fund manager in his own right. For detailed bottom up analysis of smaller growth plays you just cannot beat Mark and his detailed stock specific presentations are always packed with ideas. He is followed by Dominic Frisbey, comedian and gold guru. Have you ever seen his debt bomb video? If not watch it http://tomwinnifrith.com/articles/204/debt-bomb-great-video-well-done-dominic-frisby as it is a classic. Dominic is not only someone who writes about gold but he has made more than a million quid from more or less zero capital buying and selling the stuff. His theme: gold.

We have the UK’s two best known bear raiders in conversation (with me). That is to say Evil Knievil and Lucien Miers (profiled HERE). In what is promised to be a structured presentation they will outline their market views but also specifically a top ten shorts for 2013.

Moving on we also have a keynote presentation from another Nigel. That is Nigel Farage MEP the leader of UKIP on why the UK should save itself billions and quit the Evil Empire. Farage is funny and articulate and he has a good point don’t you think?

If you want a free ticket book NOW HERE, as the 2,500 seats will go on a first come first served basis

But it does not end there. During the afternoon we have two alternatives for you.

Choice One is the Traders Session. Lead by Clem Chambers of ADVFN, half a dozen of the UK’s best known traders will discuss strategies, charts and ideas to make money in 2013. On stage are Zak Mir, John Piper, Simon Denham of London Capital and Alpesh Patel.

Choice two are the breakout rooms where you can hear presentations on how to make money in mining stocks by Amanda Van Dyke a partner at Dundee Securities and chair of Women in Mining, on turfing out useless boards and shareholder activism by Roger Lawson of ShareSoc, on how climate change laws will cost you dear by Christopher Booker and on making money from alternative investments by Mike Hall of Stanley Gibbons. Each speaker will do two presentations.

That knockout line-up is surely enough. To book free tickets which will be allocated on a first come first served basis click HERE

Not enough? Well how about the companies attending giving you a unique chance to chat to the CEOs of companies you may be invested in or thinking about backing. Among those already lined up are: EMED, Minoan, Vatukoula, Stanley Gibbons, Ortac, Intandem, Leyshon Resources, ReThink Group, Northern Petroleum, 1Spatial, Wishbone Gold, PGC Entertainment, Anglesey Mining, Red Rock Resources, Regency Mines, Sharescope, Mechan Controls, Symphony Environmental, K3 Business Technology, @UK, Alexander Mining, London Capital Group and the list goes on and on. There will be around 80 stands on the day.

The venue is Excel in London and the fun starts at 9.30 AM on April 13th. There are 2,500 tickets available and they will go on a first come first served basis. But hurry. Already the show is one third booked out!

If you want more details or to book a seat go HERE to the UKInvestor Show website.

I look forward to seeing you in April

Geoffrey Bloom MEP (UKIP) - Stunning Video

Okay this is from the Parliament of the Evil Empire May 2011 but I have only just stumbled across it thanks to Nigel Wray (a man with sound views on the EU). It is truly superb stuff.

Wait for the Question from Euro-loon MEP Mr Goebbels after the main speech and to Bloom’s wonderful answer. Great stuff.

Sorry if you have seen this video before. If not it is worth spending three minutes watching.

Ideally you will be watching while earing an “It’s Time to Leave” T-shirt, Sweatshirt or Hoodie and drinking Contra coffee from an It’s Time to leave coffee mug.

You can purchase all of the above items only here, in my online store.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage MEP joins headline speakers at UKInvestorShow on April 13th

UKInvestor Show is an event about making money but I have always thought such a show needs one non investment speaker and I am delighted to say that Nigel Farage MEP emailed this morning and he is up for it. The leader of UKIP will talk about how staying in the EU costs all of us so much and why we should leave now.

And so on April 13th at Excel we now have a main stage line up of Nigel Wray (Britain’s Buffett), Nick Leslau (property legend and secret millionaire), bear raiders Evil Knievil and Lucian Miers and Dominic Frisbey, Mr Gold and Nigel Farage. And there is one other surprise for you on the main stage.

The traders session ( also a main stage event) is chaired by Steve Moore and stars Clem Chambers, Alpesh Patel, Simon Denham, John Piper and Zak Mir ( plus one name to reveal shortly)

In the breakout rooms we have the Goddess, Amanda VanDyke on making money from mining stocks, Stanley Gibbons boss Mike Hall on alternative investments, Roger Lawson on shareholder activism and Christopher Booker on how global warming costs you so much.

There is the Poulden v Winnifrith debate (10 minutes of main stage comedy) and 80 companies presenting at CEO level.

You have to admit that is a cracking line-up. No other show even comes close. If you want to hear a master investor speak this is the only show worth attending. To register for your free ticket on a first come first served basis go HERE.
